Horner explains ‘root trigger’ of Verstappen-Perez group orders row

A heated disagreement erupted inside Purple Bull on the Sao Paulo Grand Prix when Verstappen refused to surrender sixth place to teammate Perez to assist the Mexican in his quest to beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to runner-up spot within the 2022 F1 drivers’ championship.

Purple Bull had requested Perez to let Verstappen by means of following a late Security Automotive interval on the proviso that he would return the place if he was unable to catch and move Fernando Alonso within the last laps.

Requested why he had disobeyed the instruction after the chequered flag, Verstappen responded over group radio: “I instructed you already final summer season, don’t ask that once more to me… I gave my causes, and I stand by it.”

Dutch media reported Verstappen’s actions have been payback for Perez costing him the possibility to win the Monaco Grand Prix earlier within the season.

Perez crashed on his last lap of qualifying, inflicting a pink flag which prevented Verstappen from enhancing and probably taking a vital pole place. Perez went on to win the race.

Perez denied he had crashed intentionally and instructed reporters within the rapid aftermath of the Interlagos race that Verstappen had proven “who he actually is”.

Horner insists each Verstappen and Perez have put the incident behind them after Purple Bull held clear-the-air talks following the race.

“I believe the foundation reason for the issue was we had by no means envisaged being in a scenario, being within the last few laps, being in sixth and seventh place in that Grand Prix,” mentioned Horner.

“And I believe it was one thing that, as we hadn’t envisaged it, we hadn’t mentioned it earlier than the race, and I believe that was a mistake on our half, that we must always have thought by means of or tried to assume by means of each single situation.

“And so, I believe that was a mistake as a group that we did not focus on it and provide you with a really clear plan. Clearly, it was unlucky what occurred, however it was rapidly mentioned, brazenly and transparently.

“And each drivers have been very clear, open, and trustworthy with one another, and from that as a group we transfer on and the dynamic between the drivers is completely fantastic.”

Together with their breach of the F1 price cap, the incident overshadowed the top to a implausible season for Purple Bull, because the group claimed 17 wins on their approach to their first constructors’ world title since 2013, whereas Verstappen stormed to a second successive drivers’ crown.

However Horner insists the group will be taught from the row and transfer on.

“I believe we made some errors in Brazil, we have discovered from that and, as I say, we transfer on,” he added.

“We’ve achieved some wonderful issues. These two drivers have carried out extremely effectively collectively. They’re the explanation that we’re within the place that we’re.

“Max’s season [was] on one other planet [last] 12 months. So, we’re not going to let the occasions of a few laps in Brazil dictate the 12 months for us.”
